Current Trends in Custom Home Design

One of the greatest parts about designing a custom home is that you can create a space that is uniquely your own. Like with interior design or fashion, custom home design absolutely follows a trend pattern. Here, we’re talking about some of the current trends in custom home design that are making waves now and for 2021.

Curb Appeal

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, and nowhere is this more true than with your home’s curb appeal. It’s the first thing people see when they pull up in front of your home, and current design trends are incorporating thoughtful exterior touches like painted brick facades, siding, metal roofs, and unique architectural details like arches.

Energy Efficient

Building an energy-efficient home can save you money over the life of your home. Consider installing floor-to-ceiling windows that help light pour into your space while also cutting down on your energy costs. Insulation and improved wall assembly can also help your home to be more energy-efficient. Natural materials are also being incorporated into homes right now to make them healthier overall. Think VOC-free paints and cabinetry that are made from natural materials versus human-made.

Mixed Materials

Mixing up your materials has long been a way to marry two different styles together. But the focus has shifted from mixing up furniture and home decor to actually incorporating mixed materials into the overall construction design. These days, we see a lot of natural woods like teak, walnut, and birch being paired with more industrial materials like polished concrete and mixed metals. Combining materials can create an edgy, unexpected look and feel to your home while still achieving the idea that less is more.

Colorful Kitchens

Neutrals have been changing in recent years, and perhaps nowhere is this more popular than in the kitchen. Whereas kitchen cabinetry and islands have historically trended towards white or truly neutral tones, now, designers are shifting their focus to other neutrals like navy blue, olive green, dark teal, and different bold colors to help anchor a room’s design aesthetic.

Attention to Details

Dark accents, millwork patterns like honeycomb or diamonds, wainscotting, board and batten, vertical paneling, and more all help create texture and detail on a home’s walls that cannot be overlooked. It’s a great way to create a focal point in your home, whether it’s a statement wall in a master bedroom or even the ceiling in a formal dining room.

Front Doors

Your front door is one of the first things that guests will notice when they arrive. It’s the entry point into your home and also their first glimpse of what may be hidden inside. Your front door is an excellent place for a pop of color. And because there are so many styles of front doors, like those with windows that allow more natural light inside, the possibilities can be endless when it comes to creating a style that’s perfect for your home.
