Don’t Let Winter Slow Down Your New Home Dreams

For some homebuyers, the idea of building their dream home in the winter sounds out of this world! And not in a good way. Many people are unfamiliar with the new techniques and products on the market that allow custom homebuilders to continue their work right through the winter months.

This is great news for buyers who find themselves with new home dreams when the weather turns cooler!

At Dahl Custom Homes, we are a year-round operation, delighting customers with custom construction whenever they need it. We organize our materials and tools in such a way that keeps them safe from the elements, including keeping lumber covered and removing any snow that might have accumulated before it melts.

Of course, there are some considerations for building in the winter. These include possibly having to heat the unfinished home to protect the plumbing and the drywall.

You also may have to employ a snowplow to allow access to the job site. It’s a good idea to sit down with your custom home builder and discuss any costs associated with winterizing during your build. That way, there are no surprises at completion.

There are actually some advantages to building in the winter! These include a slower pipeline of work for subcontractors who are more readily available at this time, and it is actually easier for us to build under the cover of snow than it is while it’s raining in the spring. Sometimes, permits are easier to come by at this time of year too, because there is less of a backlog at government agencies.

Because we are a custom builder, there is a lot of preparation and planning that goes into each of the homes we build. We spend a lot of time with our clients pouring over the details to ensure we get their vision just right.

This can sometimes push out the timeline to late winter anyway, meaning only a few months are spent actually hammering away on your new dream home during the winter. Our crews love to stay busy though, so having projects that span the winter months are something we always look forward to.

Another benefit for buyers is that building in the winter often means a spring move-in date, which is the ideal time to begin landscaping. It’s the perfect time to plant trees and flowers, giving your gorgeous new dream home the curb appeal that you have always imagined.

We are a custom home builder who specializes in the Marion, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City Corridor. If you’re considering a new home build and would love to be moved in by spring, we would love to discuss your objectives! Please contact us today.

PS – If the sound of building a home from scratch this Winter doesn’t sound like the right fit, we have some great news! Our newly-finished home at 1281 Tramore Road in Marion is move-in ready and adorned with only the finest in finishes. Pack your toothbrush and move on in!
