How to Get The Most Out Of Your Bonus Room

Bonus rooms are just that: a bonus! They are spaces where your imagination can take you as far as you want, allowing you to create the perfect space for your lifestyle. Whether you’re building a custom home from the ground up or you already have a bonus room in your current home, they are a wonderful flex space that you can do a ton with! Here are some ideas.

Family Room

One of the most popular ways homeowners use a bonus room is by creating a separate family room from their formal living room. Think comfortable couches and chairs for the ideal TV-watching space!

Home Theater

If your family are huge movie buffs, you can up the ante on your flex space by creating a dedicated home theater! Oversized comfy chairs or a giant sectional are great options, not to mention a sizable screen. And if you really want to go over the top, why not an in-room popcorn machine?

Guest Suite

Another great use of space is to create a first-floor guest suite with an ensuite bathroom. This can be very lucrative down the line, both if you decide to sell your home and/or if you require a first-floor living space later in life.

Home Office

If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that many of us are more than capable of working from home! Consider transforming your bonus room into a dedicated home office to maximize productivity and cut down on distractions.

Game Room

Game rooms are always a fun addition to the home! Whether you love to play pool or billiards, or you’re into more traditional video games, the options here are truly endless. Arcade video games, recliner chairs, big-screen TVs, and maybe even a built-in wet bar will enhance your experience in this fun space.

Home Gym

Another byproduct of the pandemic was working out at home. If you’re looking to get back in shape and prefer the comforts of your own space, why not create a home gym in your flex space? There are ample ways to make it your own, from free weights and cardio machines to spin bikes and more.

Playroom

Ask any parent with a dedicated kid’s playroom, and they will wax poetically about the ability to close the doors and hide away the toys and mess! Consider adding a TV in the playroom so your younger kids can watch their shows and movies separate from the rest of the family.

Crafting

If you’re a big crafter or gift wrapper, your bonus room might be the perfect place to establish a creative haven! Think of all of the storage possibilities a crafting room would give you, cutting down on odds and ends strewn throughout your home.

Library

Calling all readers and bookworms! That flexible space in your home is the ideal place to create a quiet reading nook, complete with shelves upon shelves of your favorite reads.

Laundry/Mud Room

Depending on the location of your bonus room, you may be able to transform it into the laundry or mudroom you’ve always wanted. This is also a great place to stash pet items like their food, bowls, and toys.
