box beams versus solid beams

The Difference Between Solid and Box Beams

Solid beams or box beams: which one is the right decision for your custom home? Box beams, also known as wrapped beams, tend to work better with more transitional style homes, whereas solid beams can look more antique or rustic. No matter which ones you choose, your custom home will be amazing! But to help you understand the differences in more detail, read on.

Solid Beams:

One of the most significant advantages of building a custom home is getting things right the first time. Solid beams are not options for renovations or remodels because of how much they weigh and the fact that the structure was not engineered to support them.

However, if you’re going for a design aesthetic with very long beams, solid beams are the way to go. They are the perfect choice if you want a seamless look. But keep in mind, because of their solid nature, these are generally the most expensive beam options. They are also very heavy, so they can be difficult to maneuver if you have high ceilings.

Box Beams:

On the other hand, box beams offer a bit more customization, especially if you’re hoping to paint your beams instead of staining them. Because they are always decorative and not structural, they can be added later if you undergo a remodel or renovation.

They’re an excellent choice for homeowners hoping to keep costs down, too, as they are hollow and easier to install! Another plus: if you need to conceal plumbing or electrical somewhere, box beams can sometimes be used in this way to wrap components you want out of sight.

As you’re thinking through the design of your custom home, your builder will be your biggest asset in determining which beams are the right choice for your project. Be sure to loop in your architect and/or interior designer, too, if you’re using them. Together, you can come up with the most appropriate choice for the look you want, your budget, and more.
