Tips to Manage Your Home’s Heating Costs This Winter

The weather has turned chilly. It’s perfect for the season and makes us want to cozy up with a good book, a mug of apple cider, and a toasty fire in the fireplace. This also means that you have probably fired up your heater on more than one occasion (and will continue to do so over the next few months).

And, for homeowners, their first heating bill of the season can come as a shock! So, as we prepare for more cold weather and snow in the coming months, we wanted to share some tips on managing your heating costs!

Grab a Pair of Socks

Putting on a pair of socks can help you retain a lot of body heat! When you’re feeling chilly, grab a cozy pair and wear them with your slippers for even more warmth. Going with a non-heater alternative is also great because it cuts down on the dryness that can come from continually running your heater.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Take your home into the 21st century by installing a programmable thermostat like the Nest. It’s easily controlled by your smartphone, so you can make adjustments to the temperature while you’re away.

Leave the house as cool as you can during the day, and then adjust it up before returning home. It’s also a great idea to lower the temperature while you’re sleeping, which will save you money and promote a better night’s sleep.

PS- Now that the holidays are in full swing, keep an eye for substantial deals on these types of products!

Harness Warm Air

Did you know that when you take a shower and turn on the ventilation fan, it removes the steam that you could be using to warm other parts of your home? So, leave the bathroom door open and harness that warm air.

This also goes for exterior doors and windows. We all remember our parents admonishing us to “not heat the whole neighborhood,” and they had a point. When our heat is on, keep it inside of your own home!

Practice Good Heater Maintenance

A well-maintained heater will be a more efficient unit, which is why it’s so important to practice proper heater maintenance. Even though we are already into the cold season, it’s never too late to have a professional inspect and tune-up your unit, and/or replace a dirty filter that could be driving your heating costs up.

Adjust Your Water Heater

Like the thermostat, you can save yourself money each month by turning down your water heater just a few degrees. Try lowering it from 140 degrees to 120 degrees and see if you notice a big difference.

Check Your Windows and Doors for Drafts

A standard household candle is all you need to ensure that your windows and doors are free from drafts. Simply, hold the flame near your windows, door and light fixtures, and if you see the smoke moving in a horizontal direction, that means you’ve uncovered an air leak. Seal it up with caulking or weather stripping to help keep your heating costs in-line.

Turn Your Thermostat Down

This may seem counter-intuitive, but turning down your thermostat just a few degrees can help you save a lot of money on your heating bill! More than likely, you won’t notice a few degrees difference, especially if you’re employing some of our other tips!
