Infusing Your Winter Lawn with New Life

It’s hard to believe that spring has sprung with temperatures still dipping into the 30’s. Soon enough, warmer weather will be upon us, and now is a great time to take steps to infuse your winter lawn with new life. Here are some tips to bring back that beautiful lush lawn!

Water Early

Many people don’t realize that when you water your lawn is critical to its health. Watering early in the morning will help your fertilizer work the best, and this helps to create a strong and healthy lawn. A good rule of thumb is to water before 10:00 a.m. to allow your lawn to drink up all of that moisture before the sun reaches full strength to help it dry out. While you may be tempted to water in the evening or late at night, this can create a host of problems for your lawn including fungus and disease.

Choosing a Fertilizer

Just like you feed your family, you have to nourish your lawn too! And choosing a fertilizer can seem like an overwhelming task because there are so many on the market. Lean on your local lawn and garden experts to help you choose a fertilizer that will work best for your climate and type of grass. Spring truly is the best time to feed your lawn, so inquire about quick-release or slow-release fertilizer options that will produce different results depending on your wants and needs.

Mow With Caution

Sure, your lawn may look a little scraggly from the winter, which can tempt people to fire up the lawnmower. But experts will tell you to mow with caution as you make the transition from winter to spring. Steer clear of the low setting, where you may trim your lawn too short and expose the root system. This can place too much stress on your lawn and derail your efforts. The best thing to do is start with a light mow to remove the blade tips and gradually ease into more in-depth mows as the growing season goes on.

Weed Out the Weeds

Weeds are the arch nemesis of your lawn, and now is a great time to start weeding out the weeds! There are a lot of products on the market to help fight and prevent weeds, and this is another time when you will want to bend the ear of the experts to find out what will work best for your lawn. Try to pinpoint any problem areas where weeds are more prevalent, and focus your attention there.

Should I Seed?

As your lawn starts to poke out from underneath winter’s blanket, you will want to look for any bare patches that are completely common from the cold. Seeding is a great way to fill in any thin areas, and it’s actually a necessity because bare spots can lead to weed problems. You’ll need to break out your rake and break up these spots in your yard before seeding, and you’ll want to use a decent amount of seed and water to reinvigorate these areas. This will help establish new roots so your lawn will fill in lush and gorgeous!
